How to Log Time on JIRA

Following are the steps which need to be followed while logging time on JIRA.

Step 1. Open that task that has been assigned to you. When a task is assigned, an email is generated against that task, you can open that task directly from your email or you can open that specific Project from JIRA, and from there you will be able to see all the tasks/issues/tickets relevant to that Project.

  1. (Red Box) On the left side, there Is a search bar, where one can search for a specific project

  2. (Yellow Box) From here one can star (add to favorites) a project.

  3. (Green Box)  This Dropdown menu show’s Starred Projects and Recent Projects which were opened by you; this is used for easy and fast access.

Step 2. After opening a project e.g. Living abroad, JIRA Board will open, which will be showing the current sprint with all tasks/stories/bugs/tickets in it.

Step 3. Click on a specific task on which you were working your whole day and that task with details will open.

  1. (Red Box) all the descriptions and relevant information are shown in this section.

  2. (Yellow Box) Click on Time Tracking and the following window will open.

Step 4: There were some issues reported by Fabric Team on time logging; while logging time they have to correct the date as shown in “point 2”.

Do comment, what work has been done(if the task is still In progress), Tag your PM/Scrum master while type that comment. (type @xyx, xyx represents name)

  1. (Red Box) Enter the number of weeks/Days/Hours/Minutes you worked on that task on that specific day. (1day=8hours / 1d=8h)

  2. (Yellow Box) After entering Time, it’s mandatory to add the correct date on which you’re logging time.

  3. (Green Box) Work Description is added in this section, what has been done, what’s remaining, any issues/impediments/blockheads.

Step5(optional): While logging time, do check the date and time; this can be edited as well once saved. Under the description section, there is an option “Work Log”, One can edit/delete time logged from there if there is some uncertainty.

Step 6(Optional): For the Internal task/Learning task, you can create a task on Project “Shopdev General Tasks”. While Creating a task remember, there should be a proper name of the task with a description, Story points Estimate should be added (1 story point = 2 hours). Following is the process of creating a Task on the SMT board.

Open Shopdev General Tasks on JIRA, on the left side, click on Option “Backlog”, Click on “Create Issue”, Give it a proper name, description, Story points Estimate, assign it to yourself, and at the end of the day log your time accordingly.

  • The Green one is for Story, Blue is for the task and Red is for Bugs.

This task will be added to the backlog, one has to add it into the current Sprint. Tasks from the backlog can be added by dragging and dropping them into the current Sprint or they can be edited from the details of that task.

Note: “Ask your Project’s PM/Scrum Master to assign you a task 1st, then start working on that specific task and at the end of the day log your time on that specific task.”
